Understanding Ranked and Unranked Racing in iRacing

Ranked Racing:

In iRacing, most official series fall under the category of Ranked racing. These races have a direct impact on your iRating and Safety Rating, influencing the quality of opponents you face in future races and your eligibility for various racing series. Regardless of your experience level, from rookie to A class driver, these races are designed to be competitive and challenging.
Unranked Racing:
On the other hand, Unranked racing does not affect your iRating or Safety Rating. However, it is essential to note that the iRacing Sporting Code still applies. Racing safely and cleanly remains crucial even in Unranked races. The advantage of participating in Unranked racing is that the results do not impact your matchmaking or license scores. So, if a race doesn’t go as planned, it won’t negatively affect your overall rankings.
Choosing Between Ranked and Unranked Series
During a regular week on iRacing, Unranked racing is primarily available in the Rookie class, allowing everyone to participate. Examples of Unranked series in the Rookie class include the Carburetor Cup (based on the NASCAR Cup Series), Dallara Dash (featuring the Dallara DW12 from the INDYCAR Series), and Pickup Cup (based on the NASCAR Truck Series). However, it’s important to note that these are the only Unranked series in the Rookie class. All other series at the Rookie level are still considered Ranked.

In Week 13, which occurs every quarter when iRacing releases a new update, additional Unranked series are introduced. These series often feature fictional car and track combinations that are not found in the real world. Examples include the Ridiculousness series, where three different cars are combined for multi-class racing, and the Battle of the Little Wings, which applies the multi-class racing concept to open-wheel formula cars.
To choose between Ranked and Unranked Official series, simply use the Categories tab under Multiplayer – Official in the iRacing user interface. It’s worth noting that all user-created races on iRacing are also considered Unranked since they do not affect your iRating or Safety Rating. This includes Hosted racing, League racing, and AI Single-Player racing.
