Based on the novel by Warren Adler, ‘The Roses’ will follow the story of a seemingly perfect couple, Theo (played by Cumberbatch) and Ivy (played by Colman). Behind their picturesque facade, the couple struggles with competition and resentment. Searchlight president Matthew Greenfield expressed his enthusiasm for the project, describing it as a ‘wildly funny, bigger than life, and yet deeply human story.’
Both Cumberbatch and Colman will not only star in the film but also serve as producers. Colman’s production company, South of the River, will collaborate with Cumberbatch’s SunnyMarch to bring this project to life. In a joint statement, Colman and her production partner Ed Sinclair expressed their excitement about working with Roach and Cumberbatch, calling it a ‘match made in cinematic comedy heaven.’
The Success of ‘The War of the Roses’
‘The War of the Roses’ was a box office hit, grossing $160 million worldwide upon its release in 1989. ‘The Roses’ will mark the first on-screen collaboration between Cumberbatch and Colman since their work on the 2021 biographical film ‘The Electrical Life of Louis Wain.’
Olivia Colman’s Latest Film ‘Wicked Little Letters’
In addition to her upcoming role in ‘The Roses,’ Colman has been promoting her latest film, ‘Wicked Little Letters.’ In the film, she portrays Edith Swan, a prim and proper housewife who, alongside Rose Gooding (played by Jessie Buckley), sets out to uncover the sender of offensive letters in their small seaside town.
When discussing the true story behind ‘Wicked Little Letters,’ Colman expressed her disbelief at its authenticity but praised the empowering nature of the plot. She emphasized how women in the 1920s were expected to conform to certain societal expectations, but the characters in the film defied those norms. Colman stated, ‘People think women should be a certain thing anyway, which they never f****** are and they shouldn’t be. But particularly, women in the 1920s, they couldn’t have said that, of course they wouldn’t, but they did! 85 percent of the letters are all real. And it’s all taken from the real thing. So it’s just funny, I love it.’
Anticipating the On-Screen Reunion
Fans of Cumberbatch and Colman can look forward to their on-screen reunion in ‘The Roses,’ a modern twist on a classic comedy that promises to deliver laughter and a deeper exploration of human relationships.
